Literacy & Reading

Let's Read
Let's Read is a literacy program provided in partnership by Moorabool Shire Council and The Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh.
Let's Read encourages early positive literacy experiences from birth. Reading aloud provides exposure to language, supports parent and child bonding, and assists children to develop their literacy skills.
The Let's Read program is delivered via the Maternal and Child Health Service at the key health assessments at 4 months, 12 months, 18 months and 3-5 years.
More information can be found at the Moorabool Shire Council website.

The Central Highlands Regional Library website is a great resource for parents and children alike, with lots of recommended reading and new titles to view online.

Storytime At Lerderderg Library Thursdays at 10.30am
Story/rhyme time at the Ballan Library (Mechanics Institute) Wednesdays 10am

Pre-School storytimes are fun, informal sessions for pre-school children aged from 3 to 5 years.  The storytimes are theme based sessions involving picture books, stories to tell, songs, rhymes and a simple related activity.  Pre-school storytimes are an excellent way to develop the following pre-reading skills in children:
  • Print Motivation – books and reading are fun!
  • Vocabulary – getting to know the names of things
  • Print Awareness – recognising print and understanding how books work
  • Letter Knowledge – each letter has its own name and sounds
  • Narrative Skills – being able to answer questions about the book and describe and point out things in the book
  • Phonological Awareness – recognising and playing with smaller sounds that make up words
Target Age Group – 3 to 5 years (younger children welcome)

Baby Rhyme Time At Lerderderg Library Tuesdays at 10.30am

It’s never too early to start developing literacy skills. Baby Rhyme Time is a storytime that is ideally suited for babies aged from 0 to 30 months.  Baby Rhyme Time encourages development of language and motor skills by incorporating books with simple songs, rhymes and finger plays.  Children attend the session with their parent or caregiver and both participate in the Baby Rhyme Time learning actions and rhymes.
Baby Rhyme Time is a wonderful way for very young children to experience, rhymes, activity songs and stories in a fun and learning atmosphere and is an excellent introduction to books and storytelling.
Target Age Group – 0 to 30 months (older children welcome)
