‘Best Start also applies to Breastfeeding’
August 1-7 was World Breastfeeding Week, and was a fitting time for the Moorabool Best Start Program to begin it’s breastfeeding support project by sponsoring the Village Shopping Centre to equip 2 breastfeeding spaces within the centre.
Comfortable couches are now located near the playground, and Collins Bookstore, and information boards next to the playground and within the parents room provide information on local programs and breastfeeding information and tips sheets.
Best Start are supporting an action group comprising Maternal and Child Health, Djerriwarrh Health Services, lactation consultants and local parents, to develop a range of strategies to support local mothers.
Local statistics for breastfeeding show a significant drop off rate within the first couple of weeks of discharge from hospital. The group are working on a breastfeeding support strategy that includes public awareness, making the Shire more breastfeeding friendly, and the development of a breastfeeding support service to assist mothers who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulties.
Q.Can I breastfeed wherever I am if my baby is hungry?A.Yes. A mother has the right to breastfeed her baby wherever she happens to be. This right is legally supported through the Sex Discrimination Act 1984.
